A mum has been labelled a “genius” after sharing her homemade DIY hack to speed up the process of stripping paint.
Vicki Townley, from Derbyshire, wanted to begin removing old paint from the bannister on her staircase but didn’t have any paint stripper and couldn’t find her trusty scraper.
When her husband Tom suggested they use a potato peeler to get the job done, she assumed he was joking – but found it worked it perfectly.
Practice manager Vicki filmed the quirky hack, showing her dragging the peeler over the bannister, easily removing the layer of white paint and exposing the wooden finish beneath.
The 52-year-old explained: “Tom suggested we try the peeler when I couldn’t find my usual paint scraper and we had run out of paint stripper.
“I laughed at first but he encouraged me to give it a go – and I was amazed.
“I just placed it on the bannister and applied a little pressure at a time until the desired amount of paint was taken off.”
Vicki shared the tip on Facebook where it racked up more than 1,000 likes as people hailed her a “genius” and a “life-saver”.
One person wrote: “Omg! Brilliant, I need to do mine this month so will defo give that a try!”
A second said: “Wow what a great tip,” and another added: “My mind is blown.”
However, some people urged caution that the method could damage the wood below.
Vicki added: “The reaction online was phenomenal – I couldn’t believe how many people thought it was an amazing idea.”
